After many years practicing law as a partner in respected Maryland law firms and an additional eight years serving as General Counsel for dynamic start-up companies in Silicon Valley and San Francisco, I launched my own law firm in 2016.
I understand the needs of growing small- and mid-size companies. You require flexible and versatile legal support, but do not want to be burdened by the high cost of hiring an in-house attorney or paying large, high-priced law firms on an hourly basis. I have run corporate legal departments and I understand the legal challenges that companies face. I think like an in-house lawyer, but I speak the language of business leaders — providing companies and individuals sound legal advice expressed in plain language. Through my Outsourced Legal Services Plans, I offer the option of paying fixed fees that are established in advance, so that you know what your legal costs will be and can budget accordingly.
I also have years of experience litigating a broad range of complex business and employment disputes before state and federal courts. For businesses or individuals facing a lawsuit or wishing to assert their rights, I bring to the table advanced trial practice and litigation skills. I advance my clients’ legal goals in a manner consistent with their business needs, while always maintaining an appropriate balance of legal and business risk.
Following graduation from law school, I served as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. John McAuliffe on Maryland’s highest appellate court, the Maryland Court of Appeals. I entered private practice and went on to became a partner with the law firm of Furey, Doolan & Abell in Chevy Chase, where my practice centered on business law, family law, and estate litigation. While in private practice, I earned an MBA at the University of Maryland, and then moved to San Francisco. There I held positions with Intel Corporation, first in its legal department and later in its sales and marketing division. I moved on to a series of positions in venture-backed internet companies in California.
In 2007, I returned with my family to Maryland, and shortly thereafter joined the law firm of Davis, Agnor, Rapaport & Skalny in Columbia, where I also went on to become a partner. My practice there centered on business transactions and litigation. In 2016, I opened the Law Office of Steven J. Lewicky in Columbia, Maryland.
I am active in local business organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce and the Howard County Tech Council, and in organizations that advocate for people with disabilities. I serve on the Governmental Affairs Committee of the Howard County ARC, and I am a member of the Trial Courts Judicial Nominating Commission for the Sixth District, which proposes candidates to the governor for appointment to trial court judgeships in Howard County.
I am licensed to practice before the courts of Maryland and the District of Columbia, and I am a member of the bars of the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, and the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. I am also a member of the bar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, and an inactive member of the State Bar of California.
I am a small-business lawyer who understands your needs. Whether you need legal advice on employment law, discrimination claims, construction litigation, copyright law, franchise law, or government contracting, I am here to assist you. I will work as an advocate for your small business, with the personal touch of an in-house lawyer and the expertise of a large firm. I practice in Howard County, Anne Arundel County, Baltimore County, Montgomery County, Ellicott City, Columbia, Fort Meade, Catonsville, Clarksville and throughout Maryland and the District of Columbia.
